What to Do When You Don’t Know Where to Start

When you do not know where to start, the best thing you can do is give it some thought, but do not overthink it.

Just start.

I have found that clarity often comes after you begin, not before. You do not always need the perfect plan, the perfect system, or the perfect tool. Sometimes, you simply need to take the first few steps and allow the process to show you what comes next.

This is especially true when you are trying to organize a business.

Maybe you have never used a project management tool, and you are trying to decide between Trello, Asana, or ClickUp. It makes sense to compare features and understand what each platform offers.

But at some point, researching can turn into overthinking.

In my experience, simplicity is usually the best place to start. If you have a small team of one, two, or three people, Trello may be enough. It is simple, visual, and easy to learn.

You do not need to build the perfect system on the first day.

Create a board and start adding every task that needs to be completed. Do not worry about organizing everything into perfect categories yet. Simply create a card for each task.

You might create one list for your tasks, one for your operations manager, and another for another team member. As you continue using the board, you may notice that certain tasks belong together or are part of a larger project.

That is when you begin making adjustments.

The best way to know whether a system works is to actually use it.

I take the same approach when I organize my home. If I am cleaning out my closet, I do not try to tackle everything at once. I start on one side and look at the first five hangers.

I decide what to keep, donate, or throw away. Then I move on to the next five.

As I go, categories begin to appear. What feels overwhelming becomes manageable because I am only focusing on what is in front of me.

The same principle works in business.

Start by making a list of everything that needs to be done. Once the tasks are visible, you can begin grouping them, prioritizing them, and assigning them.

Organization does not always begin with a perfect system. Sometimes it begins with getting everything out of your head and into one place.

That alone can help you feel calmer and more grounded.

When tasks are visible, the details are easier to manage. You can see what needs attention, what can wait, and what may need to become a larger project.

You can always improve the system later. Your team may grow, your needs may change, and you may eventually move to a more robust platform. But you do not need the final system in order to take the first step.

So, the next time you need to decide which tool to use to organize your business, try this:

      1.   Start with the simplest tool that meets your current needs.
      2.   Get every task out of your head and into one place.
      3.   Organize and group tasks as patterns begin to appear.
      4.   Focus on a few items at a time so the process feels manageable.

You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin.

Sometimes the best way to find the starting point is simply to start.
